In 2018 the UMCG hospital in the Netherlands, asked a small group of students to develop a tablet app prototype that would help elderly people who were rehabilitating motivate to move and get rid of boredom in the hospital rooms. Together with 4 students we developed a serious game called Peter O'pan.
Storytelling
Peter O'pan tells a story about the full grown up Peter Pan who's now in an elderly house, struggling to move. One night he goes to the bathroom and sees a photo of his young self on one of his adventures. He touches the photo and at that moment falls through the photo in the world of that adventure. He receives a message: Welcome back. He's being told that his Green Peter Pan hat that has his imagination and fantasy skills has been locked in a tower many years ago since he started growing up. Now It's his task to get it back. In his pyjama's the old Peter Pan Starts his journey.
On his adventure to find his green hat, the Old Peter Pan comes across many things. Talking animals for example. These animals all give him a task to be able to move on. These tasks require movements from the player to lift or shake the tablet. Giving them a task to move their arms and upper body. As the game progresses Peter O'Pan can win multiple things for completing the game and getting closer to his hat, like numbers to open the gate at the castle or little riddles. When the game progesses Peter O'pan starts moving better and less stiff. Even his grey pajama's are turning green again just like when he was young. He's getting his imagination and joy in life back. The elderly player gets these notifications to be motivated as well to start moving again and get their joy in life back.
